①注重第一个模仿对象，母亲的言行将对子女产生巨大影响。我国古代的母亲很注意在子女面前的言行举止。
②注意环境影响。《颜氏家川》中说：“人在年少，神情未定，所与款狎，熏渍陶染，言行举动，无心于学，潜移默化自然似之”。小时候所受的环境影响，会自然而然形成品德。古代母亲很重视周围环境对孩子的影响，如大家熟悉的“孟母择邻”便是生动的一例。
③反对娇惯溺爱。古代注意到母亲多性格温柔，对孩子十分爱抚。但强调母亲不能对子女娇惯溺爱。“慈母败子”成为古代母亲的座右铭。
④寓教于喻。古人特别注意在教育儿童中运用比喻的方法，生动形象地说明某些道理。
⑤教子清廉。廉洁奉公是一种美德。我国古代的母亲，在他们的儿女长大成人当了官以后，也不放弃教育的责任，教训他们的为官清廉，不能凭借职权贪污受贿，表现了古代妇女的高尚品德。
