george clark was an american soldier born in virginia. during the american revolutionary war, he served as a leader of the defence of kentucky, then part of virginia, and financed his campaigns with borrowed funds. at the end of the war, however , the state of virginia refused to give him a refund, leaving him in financial ruin.
late in life, clark became crippled, and applied for a military pension. the virginian legislature voted him a pension of $400 a year, and sent him a ceremonial sword. it is said that he told the emissary who presented the sword to him: "young man, when virginia needed a sword, i gave her one. now she sends me a toy. i want bread!" he thrust the sword into the ground and broke it with his crutch.
