on 14 august 1937, a fleet of japanese planes launched a sudden attack on hangchow. flying their obsolete aircraft, chinese air force major kao chih-hang and his fellow pilots destroyed six of the attacking planes, while suffering no losses of their own. this was china's first successful interception of a major japanese air attack.on 21 november, during the japanese attack on nanking, kao saw 18 enemy planes flying straight for the chinese aircraft on the ground. in an attempt to save the aircraft, kao disregarded both falling bombs and instructions. he raced to his plane and prepared to take off. however, before he could get into the air to fight, his aircraft was hit by a japanese bomb. he was only 29 when he died.
